How to: Sun Salutations B

Breaking down this practice oft-included in vinyasa classes

Align shares one yoga class a week delivered to your inbox that takes minimal time with holistic support for your mind, body, and nervous system.

Good morning and happy Monday!

Last week, we learned how to practice Sun Salutations A (Surya Namaskar A). Today, we’re following that up with another sequence that often accompanies a vinyasa class - Sun Salutations B or in sanskrit, Surya Namaskar B.

Based on my experience, Sun Salutations A are more commonly included, especially depending on the type of studio you’re practicing at. At the studio where I first did my teacher training and then taught at for 5 years, Sun A and Sun B were taught in every level 2 class. Nowadays, I’ll teach them sometimes in class, but not always, depending on where we’re leading towards.

Here’s an example of where you might find Sun B during a vinyasa class: You’ll warm up, practice Sun A, and then practice a couple poses that open up the hips like crescent lunge, warrior II, or extended side angle. Then comes Sun B!

Here’s the breakdown of the flow:

  • Tadasana (Mountain)

  • Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute)

  • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold)

  • Ardha Uttanasana (Standing Half Forward Fold)

  • Plank into Chaturanga Dandasana (Low Plank) or right into Chaturanga

  • Bhujangasana (Low Cobra) or Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Up Dog)

  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Down Dog)

  • Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I) - right side

  • Plank

  • Chaturanga

  • Bhujangasana (Low Cobra) or Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Up Dog)

  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Down Dog)

  • Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I) (left side)

  • Plank

  • Chaturanga

  • Bhujangasana (Low Cobra) or Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Up Dog)

  • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Down Dog)

  • Ardha Uttanasana (Standing Half Forward Fold)

  • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Fold)

  • Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute)

  • Tadasana (Mountain)

First, we’ll spend time breaking down each part and then we’ll bring it all together to flow through a few times!

Let me know what you think - and if there’s anything else you’d like to learn in this format!
