Align by Kait Santos shares one yoga class a week delivered to your inbox that takes minimal time and supports your mind, body, and nervous system.
Hello, my friends, and happy Monday!
Today’s practice is a 10-minute foam rolling sequence to help release and break up the fascia.
What is fascia?
Fascia is a thin, protective casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every single organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in place within your body. A helpful visual is to think about when you’re preparing to cook a chicken breast, for example, and there’s that thin, white layer around the meat. Or, if vegetarian is more your style, think about the thin layer around each piece of the inside of an orange.
What does fascia do?
It provides structure and support throughout the entirety of your body. It holds your muscles together, allowing them to contract and stretch. It provides a smooth surface so that the muscles, joints, and organs can safely glide against one another without creating friction or tears.
Sometimes, when we’re feeling tight, it’s a result of tension within the fascia and working to release the fascia can help your body move more comfortably - and safely! Stretching can only do so much. Foam rolling is a really great practice to get into, especially if you’re active in other ways like running or strength training.
All you’ll need for this sequence is a foam roller - whatever size or firmness suits you best! Feel free to come back to this practice time and time again.
As always, let me know if you have any questions!
